Head Coach Jonathan Woehl

Jonathan Woehl will begin his seventh season as head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach in 2023-24.

During the 2021 outdoor track season, senior Beau Ackerman became the first MSUB track athlete to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Track Athlete of the Year honors under Woehl’s direction. Ackerman placed fourth in the javelin at the NCAA D2 National Championships, broke his own school record with a throw of 233-7 feet to win his second GNAC title and also was named the West Region Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

In his first year in charge (2017-18), Woehl guided senior Jorey Egeland (distance) and junior Beau Ackerman (javelin) to All-American accolades at the NCAA D2 National Championships.

Woehl assumed the head coaching position after two seasons as the assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach.

Woehl assisted on several record-breaking performances during the 2016-17 academic year, and helped guide Sam Zook to NCAA Division All-American honors during the outdoor season.

Under Woehl’s guidance in 2015-16, MSUB’s student-athletes broke numerous track and field school records, particularly in the areas of jumps and hurdles.

Woehl joined the Montana State University Billings staff after spending a year as the Southwest Minnesota State University assistant cross country and track and field coach. Prior to that, Woehl was the program’s graduate assistant for two years while earning his master’s degree in business administration and marketing.

Originally from Ankeny, Iowa, Woehl attended Northwest College in Orange City, Iowa, where he was a 4-year letter winner in track and cross country. He is the school record holder in the half marathon for the Red Raiders, completing his undergraduate in 2008 with a double major in mathematics and art.

Woehl was a national qualifier in the NAIA marathon in 2008, and was a leader on the team as the designated captain his senior season.

During his time as a graduate assistant, Woehl oversaw the recruiting efforts of the coaching staff. During his stint at SMSU, Woehl coached the distance runners and horizontal jumpers.
